Insert quote about things improving for vegetarians here. No, this isn’t Tory Twitter, but the old cliches about vegetarianism in Central and Eastern Europe certainly apply to Košice. Slovakia’s eastern champion is embracing the herbivore lifestyle, going whole-hog (eurgh, apologies) in removing the meat and bringing the colour to the fore. The same goes for veganism, and Košice’s sizeable student population is just as likely to be devouring lentils as it is lamb. A vegetarian or vegan in Košice? We’ve got you covered.
Insert ‘does what it says on the tin’ cliche here. Salad Box is a healthy street food option that offers patrons the chance to put together their ideal salad box before devouring the whole thing like some sort of primitive monster. ‘Food is life, make it good’ is a clumsy but very accurate mantra for this continental culinary classic.
If you’re unsure where to find us in Košice, the chances are we’ll be at Halmi Place. Stroll through the passage off of Hlavni at number 21, take a left before the umbrellas and stroll up the grand staircase, into a co-working coffee-drinking space of breathtaking magnificence. If you close your eyes tight enough, you might just be able to imagine being some sort of grand old noble, but we’re happy to sit with a cold lemonade, hot coffee or whatever else and live in the now. Quite possibly our favourite place in town.
Considered by many to be the very first vegetarian restaurant in the region, AjVega has been pumping out top notch herbivore-friendly food since the days of Czechoslovakia, 1990 to be exact. The interior of the restaurant is about as green as it gets, an apt colour to say the least, and the menu changes frequently. €4.50 for a three course meal is pretty excellent, to say the least.
What do you expect from a barista who claims to make the best espresso in the city? We’re not sure if you’d actually expect the best espresso, but that’s what you’re going to get at this little cafe on Dominican Square. Sit in the sun (or the shade) and watch the traders of the morning market go about their business, complete with a fantastic espresso and a bite or two for breakfast.
With one eye on the environment and both firmly focused on presenting some seriously good food, VE.DOM.E defies its wacky name to be one of the best vegetarian options in Košice. Well, vegan actually, as no animals were involved in this process whatsoever. The decor is wonderfully minimal too, really ramming home the ‘bistro’ aspect of it all.
