A perfect synergy of architecture and music. One of the best symphony orchestras in Poland meets one of the most
acoustically perfect concert halls in Europe. The Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1935 in Warsaw, has for many years acted as Poland's cultural ambassador on the international art scene. It has cooperated with some of the greatest composers of the second half of the 20th century presenting first performances of their works. They have also recorded more than 190 albums for many Polish and foreign labels (Decca, EMI, Phillips, etc.).
In 2014 Katowice celebrated the unveiling of its newest architectural and cultural jewel - the new headquarters of the NOSPR (The Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra). Not only is this one of the more striking and architecturally astonishing buildings to be built in Poland in recent years, it is also one of the most acoustically pristine performance halls in all of Europe. On the outside its brick columns, smooth and bright red facade is a tribute to the industrial identity of Katowice and reference to the architecture of the mining housing estates. The inside, on the other hand, is modern and state of art - over 400 rooms divided into offices, dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms, recording studios and a concert hall. To perfect the pin drop precision of the main hall’s acoustics, the Katowice based Architecture firm Konior collaborated with Yasuhisa Toyota - founder of the Japanese Acoustics solutions company Nagata Acoustics (creators of the Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles, among others). Their collaboration resulted in a sonically rich and visually stunning performance hall that can seat over 1,800 people with no obstructed views or muffled sound. The main concert hall is also equipped with cutting edge technology to both broadcast concerts live and record multi-track albums live. This is truly a building fitting of Poland’s finest orchestra. In 2023 the hall has added another unique feature to its portfolio - one of the largest pipe organs in Europe! Even the area around the hall is music themed - it is an artistic garden with squares, fountains, amphitheatres and installation spaces, where concerts and performances are often held. Check NOSPR’s website for concert tickets or plan your next trip to Katowice around a visit to this absolute shrine of a Symphony Hall. The ticket box office is open Mon-Fri 10:00-18:00.
