Jerzy Kukuczka mural

ul. Markiefki 96 ,   Katowice Centre         more than a year ago
Painted by Wojciech Walczyk, this mural is a portrait of Jerzy Kukuczka, a Polish alpine and high-altitude climber, who was the second man ever to climb all fourteen 'eight-thousanders' (that is, the mountain peaks in Asia that are 8,000m above sea level). Kukuczka was born in Katowice and identified as an ethnic Silesian. This mural at the intersection of Markiefki and Katowicka streets in Bogucice will soon be the neighbour of the Kukuczka Himalayan Centre. The initiative for this mural in memory of the high-altitute climer were the efforts of local councillors.
