The half-ruined Dornröschenschloss or 'Sleeping Beauty' castle, perched on top of an ancient extinct volcano, was originally built in 1334 to protect a nearby pilgrim route, and was upgraded to a beautiful hunting lodge around 1500. It later fell to ruins until the Koseck family took over in 1957 and started a long process of consolidation, renovation, building and rebranding - cleverly referring to the Grimm Brothers' famous fairy-tale. Prince Charming and Sleeping Beauty receive English-speaking visitors every Sunday at 14:30 in summer. The castle has a café, medieval gardens, romantic hotel rooms and offers tours (in German Wed & Sun, English on private tours too).
