The kind of coffee'n'cake specialists where you might take your Granny at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon are surprisingly thin on the ground in Kaliningrad, so the 9 Kruassan (meaning Croissant) cafes scattered around the city centre hold something akin to a monopoly. Mercifully, the coffee is up to standard and the prodigious glass-encased selection of cakes, tarts and biscuits looks thoroughly yummy (although we'll sadly have to pass on the nuclear day-glo range of meringues!). Not to be outdone in the baffling stakes, though, they also manage to stock a huge selection of European wine which none of their customers appear to have noticed yet.
