One of the most celebrated examples of South African anti-apartheid satirical theatre, Woza Albert!, returns to the Joburg Theatre stage by popular demand. The two-man play imagines the second coming of Jesus Christ, with the messiah returning to the world in 1980s South Africa. Arriving on a South African Airways flight to jubilant crowds at Jan Smuts Airport, Jesus Christ (or Morena) is initially welcomed by Prime Minister Botha but soon falls foul of the cruel apartheid state who view him as a terrorist.

A fantastically clever and witty play that pokes fun at the absurdities of the white rulers of apartheid South Africa and their religious pretences, the play deftly mixes laugh-out-loud humour with poignant reminders and criticism of the cruelty of the apartheid system. Despite being written some three decades ago Woza Albert! feels as relevant today as ever with the painful truths of poverty, exploited workers, hypocritical leaders and the fear of foreigners still familiar problems in our present day society.
