This year, the Open City programme of free and ticketed events runs from Thu, Aug 29 – Thu, Sep 19, inviting Joburg's visitors and residents to immerse themselves in the city's rich cultural offerings spanning art, music, performance, food, and fashion. A city-wide art takeover
Sat, Aug 31 from 10:00 – Twelve African artists, whose work includes photography in various forms, feature in the group show, The Uncanny, by Through The Lens Collective (1 Fox Street, Newtown). "Photography in itself deals with memory, and the murky area of what we believe we remember," reads the curatorial statement.
Sat, Aug 31 from 11:00 – Join Kalashnikovv Gallery for the opening of the solo exhibition, LETTERLIK, the product of a month-long cultural exchange with Dutch artist Niels 'Shoe' Meulman – known for his pioneering graffiti and graphic design work in the '80s and '90s. Shoe will show work created since his arrival in Joburg alongside three local artists of repute: Naledi Modupi, African Ginger, and Rasty Knayles.
Sun, Sep 1 from 11:30 – Head to Victoria Yards for a panel discussion around A Feral Commons, curated by Tairone Bastien. The project explores site-specific artworks rooted in local ecologies, fostering unexpected inter-species collaborations. Thuli Mlambo-James will moderate the discussion, featuring Io Makandal, Camille Chedda, Refiloe Namise, and Muhammad Dawjee.
Wed, Sep 4 from 11:30 – The artist behind Joburg's first eco-duct, Io Makandal hosts a walkabout at Victoria Yards, focusing on her work Ophidian's Promise as an example of sustainable art-making.
Wed, Sep 4 from 18:00 – Two of Roger Ballen's films, Roger the Rat and The Theater of Apparitions show at the Inside Out Centre for the Arts. The evening will include a brief talk by Ballen.
Thu, Sep 5 from 16:00 – Experimental exhibition space EXPRESS:ON celebrates its anniversary at Weed Lover's Market (7 Loveday Street, Marshalltown) with a group show featuring six visual artists.
Fri, Sep 6 from 10:00 – Working closely with South African artists to create handmade, collectable fine art boards, Crispy Skateboards hosts a pop-up exhibition at 1 Fox Street, Newtown. Natalie Paneng, Felix Laband, Bevan De Wet, Mary Sibande, and Minenkulu Ngoyi are among the featured artists.
Sat, Sep 7 from 10:00 – Explore artist studios and exhibitions around the city. Catch the City Sightseeing Red Bus with Thabo the Tourist for a guided tour of Ellis House, Victoria Yards, Artyli Gallery, and more, ending with FNB Art Joburg at the Sandton Convention Centre.
