The Frog Boot Bar

Tucked away in The Courtyard Illovo (formerly the Illovo Post Office Centre), The Frog Boot Bar is an unexpected fusion of quality boots and great food. The bar is an extension of Jim Green Footwear, a proudly South African brand manufacturing rugged, durable boots in Pietermaritzburg for over 35 years. Read our review of The Frog Boot Bar here.

Step inside, and you’ll find Jim Green boots displayed like trophies along the walls, while the Hunter Green interior, leather chandelier, and airy terrace set the tone for a stylish yet laid-back experience. Frog Boot Bar cleverly combines a classy retail space with old-school pub charm.

The bistro-style pub menu focuses on quality over quantity. Expect elevated pub staples like fish and chips with mushy peas, bangers and mash, and an aged sirloin steak sandwich. Vegetarians are well taken care of thanks to standout options like cauliflower cheese steaks and mushroom ravioli. The Parmesan fries are a must, and the desserts – think peppermint crisp tart and sticky toffee pudding – bring a comforting local touch. The drinks list, of course, includes beers, a solid wine selection by the glass, and a well-balanced cocktail menu.

During cricket season, The Frog Boot Bar transforms into a pre- and post-game watering hole for Wanderers Stadium crowds, with special game-day deals on offer. They even offer a tuk-tuk service to navigate the chaos of Illovo’s match-day parking frenzy.

It’s an unusual concept but far from gimmicky – rather a mix of well-made boots, well-poured drinks, and well-executed food in an elegant yet welcoming space.
