Sophiatown

Tuesday Feb 27 - Sunday Mar 24       Cnr Lilian Ngoyi St and Miriam Makeba St, Newtown
share
This much-loved classic South African musical by acclaimed writer Malcolm Purkey tells the story of two black journalists living in early 1950s Sophiatown who, despite the newly implemented apartheid laws restricting interracial living arrangements, invite a Jewish female housemate to live with them. A discussion of identity, race relations, and integration ensues against the backdrop of Sophiatown’s swinging jazz scene.

Sprinkled with comedy and memorable music numbers that recall the sounds of old Sophiatown, the play dishes out laugh-out-loud, light-hearted everyday moments as well as deeply sad narratives that reflect the tragic history of this once vibrant neighbourhood that was destroyed by the apartheid state's policy of forced removals under the Group Areas Act.
