“A person’s a person no matter how small”
Seussical The Musical Junior recognises the personhood of small ones thoughtfully, professionally, and with colour and fun at Braamfontein's Joburg Theatre. In time for the school holidays, grab your small people (leave the tiny ones at home as they only allow kids aged three years and older to attend) and let them be enchanted by a magical musical production of Dr Seuss rhymes.
The elephant Horton hears a Who, and while everyone thinks he has lost his mind, he makes a connection. The interactive musical theatre includes a cast from Johannesburg’s primary schools who do a remarkable dancing, singing and acting job to bring the story alive.
The show’s directors, Jill Girard and Keith Smith, say: “The People's Theatre strives to educate younger minds in order to create a stronger generation through the medium of theatre. All the while having loads of fun in the process, and enjoying the magic that comes alive on the theatre stage.”
Our small reviewer (aged four-and-a-half) asked to watch the show again, with the reminder to mama to go early as the theatre – at the top corner of the Joburg Theatre Complex – is a bit of a walk from the parking. We wouldn’t want to miss out on the all-important popcorn and snacks from the old-school concession stand.
The show runs until Sat, Jul 30. Show times for school groups are Tues – Fri at 09:00 and 11:00. Show times for the public are 10:30 and 14:30 on weekends and school holidays.
