In the spirit of beloved author Dr Seuss, the Broadway show Seussical JR returns to Joburg Theatre by popular demand – recognising the personhood of all, big and small, with delightful characters, rhymes, moving music, and fun set and costume design. Don't miss the performance from Tue, Mar 11 – Mon, Apr 11. Book your tickets here.
Grab your small people (leave the tiny ones at home as only kids aged three and up can attend) and let them be enchanted by a magical musical production of classic Dr Seuss tales in a re-run of the popular Seussical JR by Peoples Theatre. The elephant Horton (played by Grant Towers) hears a Who, and, while everyone thinks he has lost his mind, he makes a connection. The interactive musical theatre production also includes a cast from Johannesburg’s primary schools who do a remarkable dancing, singing, and acting job to bring the story alive. Other storybook characters joining the chorus include Cat In the Hat (Katlego Nche), The Grinch (Raymond Skinner), and Judge Yertle The Turtle (Noluthando Mathebula).
The show’s director, Jill Girard says: "The books of Dr Seuss have been the stepping stones to reading for many children and introduced them to a wonderful range of characters and positive concepts. Now we bring them to life in front of their eyes and create theatre magic for them."
Our small reviewer (aged four-and-a-half) at a previous iteration of this production asked to watch the show again, with the reminder to mama to go early as the theatre – at the top corner of the Joburg Theatre complex – is a bit of a walk from the parking. We wouldn’t want to miss out on the all-important popcorn and snacks from the old-school concession stand.
