Based at the Ponte tower in Hillbrow, Dlala Nje is an inspiring non-profit tour company that brings visitors to this notorious neighbourhood to find out what the area is really like beyond the ever-present stereotypes.

Dlala Nje has collaborated with GALA (Gay And Lesbian Memory In Action) to create this special tour devoted to queer history in South Africa that pays special tribute to the many brave queer anti-apartheid activists from Hillbrow.

Hillbrow has a long history of activism, particularly during the apartheid era when it was known for its brave gay community who consistently tried to defy the state's 'morality laws'. The walk introduces some of the key historical moments in South Africa's queer history that took place in this so-called "pink neighbourhood" of the 1970s, and explores how queer people of all races and classes experienced Joburg in the 60s, 70s and 80s versus how they experience life in the city today.

The walk starts at 10:30 at the Ponte building where there is secure parking. Tickets must be booked online in advance. Tickets R500, available online here
