Award-winning designer and artist Porky Hefer’s first solo show in Joburg takes place at the Southern Guild and WhatIfTheWorld gallery in Keyes Art Mile. Hefer has gained renown on the global design circuit for his 'nest environments', whimsical and larger-than-life hanging chairs that playfully reference the natural environment. Inviting viewers to engage with his hanging 'nests' by climbing into them, Hefer's work seeks to reawaken our natural instinct to encase ourselves in cocoon like environments.
The exhibition of nests on show at the gallery include Hefer’s Fiona Blackfish, a killer whale-shaped leather hanging chair lined with a fluffy pink tongue, which was recently acquired by Australia’s oldest museum the National Gallery of Victoria. Utilising traditional techniques and materials, Hefer works alongside local craftsmen from the historic leather merchant Woodheads and The Cape Town Society for the Blind to create his nests.
