#MyJoburg with Donovan Goliath, funnyman and creative director

21 Feb 2025
In our #MyJoburg series, we speak to people who add something unique to Joburg's creative mix and get the lowdown on what enthrals them about this city.

When your parents name you Donovan David Goliath (yes, really), you’re bound to develop a sharp sense of humour. And for years, Goliath made a name for himself doing just that – bringing the laughs as a stand-up comedian, MC, TV presenter, and all-round entertainer. But these days, he’s shifting gears, taking his knack for storytelling, design, and branding into the world of creative direction.

A former advertising creative, Goliath has come full circle, now working with multiple brands to reshape the narrative of advertising and creativity in South Africa. While comedy gave him the stage, his passion for creative direction, design and content creation is now front and centre. His focus? Blending humour, strategy, and bold ideas to craft work that resonates. Of course, he hasn’t entirely left the spotlight – he’s still an MC and voice-over artist. But his most important gig these days is being a husband and a father to two daughters.

We caught up with Goliath to talk about Joburg’s unique sense of humour and comedy scene – especially as someone who grew up in the Eastern Cape – what it really takes to make it in this city, and how he manages to juggle it all, from fatherhood to freelance life.

"[A Joburger is] someone who's experienced the four corners of the city. A person who is tough, resilient, hungry for success, and who understands what this city has to offer."

Growing up in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, what was your idea of Joburg before moving here, and how did the reality compare? Any surprises along the way?
I think it's always the case for anyone who moves to a big city from a small town, you're in awe of everything, it's all moving at a rapid pace and you have to jump in if you wanna make it.

What brought you to Joburg and what makes you stay?
Work brought me here, and the opportunities that have come from said work have made me stay.

What is a surprising thing people might learn about Joburg by having a conversation with you?
There are many little hidden gems that don't get the PR they deserve. I've found interesting food establishments, landmarks, and quiet spots that only those who know know.

How would you sum up Joburg’s comedy scene?
Honestly, it had a buzzing scene before Covid hit. Unfortunately, many establishments were forced to close down, leaving a massive gap. Many young comics have tried to revive it with pop-ups here and there, but I think it will take a while before we see something solid.

If you could go back and give your 2010 self one piece of advice before stepping on to the stage for the first time at Comedy Underground in Melville, what would it be?
Tricky one to answer because I never intended on becoming a comic. I wrote a set because I thought it would be a fun thing to try out. My gags seemed to resonate with the audience and I kept doing it over and over till I left my job to pursue it full time. If anything, I'd give myself advice now to take more risks and go with the flow like I did back then.

"I'm incredibly curious about the world, so that keeps my fire burning."

You’re a man of many talents – comedy, content creation, storytelling… the list goes on. How do you juggle it all, and what keeps you exploring so many creative outlets?
Hahaha. It's always tough making time for everything, but I love what I do and find time to get my ideas out. I'm incredibly curious about the world, stories, and art and design in general, so that keeps my fire burning.

Congratulations on the recent addition to your family. As you now juggle the role of father to two children, how has fatherhood influenced you, both personally and professionally?
I'm very conscious of time and how I spend it now. There are so many things I've cut from my life to make a bit of quality time for my family. My industry is a high pressured one and it's very easy to get sucked in and commit to projects. I have to be cognisant of this always to manage stress levels and the energy I bring when I get home. Overall, having kids has given me a solid purpose and influenced most of the decisions I make.

Home is...
Where stories unfold.

Parkhurst's famous 4th Avenue is home to plenty of restaurants, making it one of Goliath's favourite Joburg suburbs. Photo: 4th Avenue, Parkhurst via Facebook.

Your favourite Joburg suburb, and why you choose it?
This is an ever-changing thing as you get older in this city. I'd have to say Parkhurst. I like the selection of restaurants and the overall vibe and energy there.

How would you describe the city's sense of humour?
Wow, that's a tricky question. There's definitely a great sense of humour here. People are always on the grind, so any moment to breathe, watch life go by, and laugh is always welcome.

"Opportunity [in Johannesburg] is everywhere if you're willing to work hard and get your hands dirty."

What three things should a visitor not leave Joburg without seeing or experiencing?
A live rugby or soccer match, a braai with locals, and a market. [See our guide to Joburg's best markets here.]

One song on your Joburg soundtrack that is either about Joburg or makes you think about this city?
No More Hunger by Khuli Chana.

The most memorable meal you have eaten in Joburg?
I stumbled upon a hidden Congolese establishment in Berea many years ago. There was a lady there braaing an array of fish which we had with plantains and a beer I've never heard of. Everything about that experience was incredible.

If you could buy one Joburg building which would it be?
I think everyone would always say Ponte Tower

Where are some of the best spots to catch a killer stand-up show in the city?
Right now, The Bioscope at 44 Stanley on Sundays.

"Don't just follow the tourist maps, find a local and let them show you the hidden spots. You'll end up having the best time of your life."

If you were Joburg's mayor for one day (average tenure) what would you change?
This could get political very quickly so I'll pass. Lol.

Favourite Joburg label, and why?
Thesis. I've always loved their consistency and what they stand for. They also gave me so many platforms to perform on and showcase some T-shirt designs at their store.

What makes someone a Joburger?
Someone who's experienced the four corners of the city. A person who is tough, resilient, hungry for success, and who understands what this city has to offer.

What do you love most about Joburg?
Opportunity is everywhere if you're willing to work hard and get your hands dirty.

What do you least like about Joburg?
You can run out of recreational things to do very quickly.

The perfect weekend in Joburg includes...
A cortado at Father Coffee, an early morning walk at Emmarentia Dam, brunch in Parkhurst, a potential farmer's market somewhere, a drive out to Magaliesberg or Muldersdrift, a beer and sports at Pirates Sports Club, and maybe a sundowner and dinner at Marble restaurant.

Your number one tip for a first-time visitor to Joburg?
Don't just follow the tourist maps, find a local who's lived in the city for years and let them show you the hidden spots. You'll end up having the best time of your life.

One Joburg personality whom you would honour with the Freedom of the City if you could, and why?
There are way too many to mention. Many people have made a huge impact in art, music, finance, entrepreneurship, e-commerce, etc. To single out one person would be an insult to the city.

Three words that describe this city.
Vibrant, diverse, and fast.
