Makhelwane Festival in Soweto – 10th anniversary

13 Dec 2024
Makhelwane Festival is back from Fri, Dec 20 – Sun, Dec 22, 2024. In its tenth year, this colourful and friendly community event celebrates local Soweto culture and the neighbourly spirit of togetherness, or ubuntu/botho.

The festival is brought together by the original makers of the Locrate Market and it's built around the idea of reviving the goodness of an earlier age of township culture, where neighbours once opened their homes to one another, and community was fostered through the exchange of food and conversation.

For one weekend, Poka Street in Orlando West is ready to open its doors to celebrate the spirit of umakhelwane, or 'neighbourliness'. Expect great street food, music, and plenty of local crafters, artists, and labels.

What to look forward to

Highlights for this edition of the festival include live performances by artists Boisanza, Mawhoo, Nicky B, and more, plus the fun New Age Street Party on Sunday. Explore Soweto’s rich culture through township tours and bike rides with Thesis Lifestyle, as well as heritage walks. Indulge in tasty and authentic African street food, sip on curated bubbly and wines, and shop at arts and craft markets showcasing the wares of local creatives. Families can enjoy a dedicated kiddies’ area with games, storytelling, and a kids' market run by young entrepreneurs. Plus, there'll be film screenings and exhibitions.

Programme of events

Fri, Dec 20: Exclusive pre-party at Native Rebels.
Sat, Dec 21: Live performances, street food, and tours.
Sun, Dec 22: The grand finale New Age Street Party.

The organisers of Makhelwane Festival have always put a focus on entrepreneurship, and this event supports the empowerment of small- and medium-sized township enterprises. Above all else, it's always a fun way to experience Soweto.
