The Academy for the Less Good Idea presents HOW | Showing the Making, a workshop to disclose artistic techniques, tactics and methods used during artistry. The event will provide you with an extraordinary chance to witness firsthand how art comes alive by exploring an artist’s thoughts, inspirations and techniques.

In the upcoming June edition of HOW, multidisciplinary artist Mary Sibande lead the workshop, accompanied by artist and lecturer Lawrence Lemaoana (her partner). Sibande will guide the audience through the process of constructing an image using a photograph from her own artistic collection. She will delve into the image's context, inherent performativity, and narrative, providing an in-depth exploration of her creative methods and strategies.

There will also be an installation that revolves around Sibande's artistic processes presented in a lecture-style performance. Lemaoana, who plays two roles as both a sounding board for Sibande and an external observer, offers valuable insights into her work by placing it within its broader art-historical context.

Additionally, seamstress Pretty Nyathi will be present throughout HOW, lending a further performative and sonic component to the event. The occasion will also showcase the musical talents of Thembinkosi Mavimbela, a double-bassist and composer.

The event will take place in the Centre Space of the Centre for the Less Good Idea at Arts on Main in Maboneng.
