Heart & Heritage specialises in ready-to-wear, artisanal women's fashion. The label predominantly features garments crafted from natural, locally sourced fabric in a neutral and monochrome palate with splashes of colour that are the brand's signature print. Each season, Kellerman makes around 30 pieces per style, and each season, she introduces signature cuts in different fabrics.
When we visited Heart & Heritage, we had the opportunity to hear more about Kellerman's fashion ethos. We also met Samuel Phiri, the skilled garment technician at Heart & Heritage, who adds an extra layer of detail and artistry with his expert touch on the sewing machine. Being an open space, those who are curious can pop in and see Phiri at work.
Heart & Heritage stands out for its unique and innovative silhouettes and shapes, seen in popular pieces like the Regent dress, Kyoto skirt, and best-selling Bow dress. Kellerman's design thinking has involved experimenting with diverse silhouettes and shapes, further inspired by her journey into motherhood. She says this has been a design departure from her earlier body-conscious styles as a fresh graduate from the University of Johannesburg.
Beyond personal evolution, Kellerman embraces diversity for herself and her eclectic customer base, and she designs garments that complement different shapes and sizes.
The vibrant social diversity of Johannesburg serves as enduring inspiration, shaping the identity of Heart & Heritage. For Kellerman, Heart & Heritage is a Joburg label through and through; it's the city where she chooses to live (she's lived in the UK and Canada but always knew she would end up back here) and where she thrives creatively.
Even if you're not shopping to buy, it's a lovely space to visit. Take a stroll through the REEA Foundation urban farm and pop into the unique stores and spaces. And if you do choose to buy, know you're supporting local. Even better, Kellerman's rent goes towards the REEA Foundation, a non-profit organisation that maintains a residential care facility for adults living with epilepsy and other neurological disorders.
Kellerman is a regular at SA Fashion Week so keep an eye out for her label on the upcoming programme. Shop online, at the Heart & Heritage shop at the REEA Foundation urban farm, or look out for the label popping up at various markets throughout the year.
