#FreshlyPlated Joburg restaurant news – July 2023

more than a year ago

In our monthly #FreshlyPlated restaurant news round-up, we share a glimpse of the latest new cafés, bars and restaurants that Joburg foodies should know about. This month we let you in on Glory's little secret, take a look at women in food, and we meet some cool guys running dark kitchens. If you missed it, catch up on our June #FreshlyPlated blog here.

Glory finds a home, and we say, "Hallelujah!"

Expect all things fanciful and fantastic from the new Glory kitchen. Photo: Glory.

This anti-establishment, pop-up kitchen now has an establishment. Glory fans across Joburg will be thrilled to hear that they’ve found a home in Parktown North, but it’s still going to be edgy and off the cuff. You can only get a booking if you’ve been before or if you attend with someone who has been previously. Call it a member's club of sorts. Whatever you want to call it, it’s going to be out of this world. They’ll be opening doors in August, and in the meantime will be hosting dinners at their test kitchen over weekends and taking bookings for private functions.

The Whippet has launched their new winter menu. One of Joburg's most loved breakfast and brunch spots, The Whippet has called Linden home for more than a decade and have now added some very decadent items to their already scrumptious offering. You can look forward to indulging in a bacon butty on toasted sourdough with HP flavoured crème fraîche, a royal parma ham and mozzerella croissant, and a range of gourmet brownie, popcorn and Frangelico hot chocolates, not to mention a Nutella doughnut coffee. We think Instagram might explode.

Hidden pâtisseries and bakeries

Yes you heard right, these dark kitchens take orders via Instagram and deliver to your door. We've tried them... and wow! They're good. They are also niche, very cool and the best at what they do.

La Tarte specialises in all things French with exquisite tartlettes filled with homemade pralines, crème pâtissière, and bejewelled fruits.
Now that's what we call a sourdough. Photo: Oboi.

Oboi Bakery specialises in breads, cakes and gorgeous ice-creams. All made to order with the best ingredients and a whole lot of love. Daniel's cinnamon babka and chocolate babka is out of this world, his sourdough is the stuff that dreams are made of, and his unique ice-cream flavours will put a smile on your dial: apple pie, cardamom and white chocolate, and even burnt toast. Pop him a DM and he'll send you his fanciful menus.

Mpho Phalane, the head chef of Food I Love You, is the culinary curator for the Phenomenal Women concert at Nirox Sculpture Park on Sun, Aug 6. Phalane will be assembling an incredible vendor list comprising only women from some of the best culinary businesses on the local food scene. Food I Love You will have its own pop-up restaurant at the concert that will offer an array of mouthwatering dishes with fresh ingredients. The concert is in collaboration with the founder of Art of Superwoman, Olwethu Leshabane, car brand Isuzu, Nirox Sculpture Park and Farmhouse58. Expect a day of pampering, entertainment and empowerment. You're encouraged to wear white to the concert, a symbol of purity and light. Book your seat here.
