In our monthly #FreshlyPlated restaurant news round-up, we share a glimpse of the latest new cafés, bars and restaurants that Joburg foodies should know about. This month we let you in on Glory's little secret, take a look at women in food, and we meet some cool guys running dark kitchens. If you missed it, catch up on our June #FreshlyPlated blog here.
Glory finds a home, and we say, "Hallelujah!"
This anti-establishment, pop-up kitchen now has an establishment. Glory fans across Joburg will be thrilled to hear that they’ve found a home in Parktown North, but it’s still going to be edgy and off the cuff. You can only get a booking if you’ve been before or if you attend with someone who has been previously. Call it a member's club of sorts. Whatever you want to call it, it’s going to be out of this world. They’ll be opening doors in August, and in the meantime will be hosting dinners at their test kitchen over weekends and taking bookings for private functions.
Parreirinha Restaurante's stellar birthday special
Les Créatifs wows
A fine-dining restaurant meets creative institution in Bryanston. Chef Wandile Mabaso's award-winning space, Les Créatifs, is a training ground for young talent, and a hub of gifted creatives burgeoning with ideas under his expert guidance. We had lunch with this star chef to find out more. Read about his 'Afrique moderne' cuisine here.

All things comforting on The Whippet's new menu
The Whippet has launched their new winter menu. One of Joburg's most loved breakfast and brunch spots, The Whippet has called Linden home for more than a decade and have now added some very decadent items to their already scrumptious offering. You can look forward to indulging in a bacon butty on toasted sourdough with HP flavoured crème fraîche, a royal parma ham and mozzerella croissant, and a range of gourmet brownie, popcorn and Frangelico hot chocolates, not to mention a Nutella doughnut coffee. We think Instagram might explode.
Ribs & Burgers serves up a premium Wagyu menu, and a R99 lunch special
Ribs & Burgers, an innovative burger chain with branches in Sandton, Fourways, Linksfield and Pretoria, have introduced a delicious Wagyu burger range with plenty of options. Choose a Hickory BBQ, Wagyu Stack Supreme, Pepper Jack Jalapeño or a Truffle and Bacon Burger, and top it up with a great range of sides. Another reason to visit is the R99 lunch menu, available daily from 11:00 – 17:00. Take your pick from burgers, steaks, salads, and chicken schnitzel, all served with a side of chips and golden onion rings. The special applies to dining in or click and collect, so there's no reason not to try it.
Satyagraha house set to become even more magical
Satyagraha House museum and bed and breakfast in Orchards, which Ghandi called home from 1908 to 1909, has announced their partnership with Une Ferme du Perche in France. Their head gardener is setting off to Normandy in September to be trained in some of the most advanced permaculture techniques in the world, with the aim of returning to transform their vegetable garden into an edible paradise for guests.
Hidden pâtisseries and bakeries
Yes you heard right, these dark kitchens take orders via Instagram and deliver to your door. We've tried them... and wow! They're good. They are also niche, very cool and the best at what they do.La Tarte specialises in all things French with exquisite tartlettes filled with homemade pralines, crème pâtissière, and bejewelled fruits.
Oboi Bakery specialises in breads, cakes and gorgeous ice-creams. All made to order with the best ingredients and a whole lot of love. Daniel's cinnamon babka and chocolate babka is out of this world, his sourdough is the stuff that dreams are made of, and his unique ice-cream flavours will put a smile on your dial: apple pie, cardamom and white chocolate, and even burnt toast. Pop him a DM and he'll send you his fanciful menus.
