Bring on a sweet new year
Just when we thought Joburg was slowing down, Just Teddy opens a new branch in Nelson Mandela Square. The fine patisserie and boulangerie delivers Dubai decadence with marble countertops, chandeliers, and gold trimmings. Along with their signature high tea experience, the new store features a champagne bar, semifreddo station, and waffle kiosk for a sweet fix on-the-go.
Summa Sundae Bar opened a new branch in Parkwood with Belgian waffles, cruffles (croissant waffles), and gourmet shakes. And if it’s too early for ice cream, they’ve introduced a breakfast menu with savoury waffles and bagels.
Cheers to the weekend
Get in the festive mood at one of Joburg’s excellent new wine bars. Qbar by Quoin Rock, located in Oxford Parks, is a dedicated wine bar showcasing Cape Town-based Quoin Rock’s fine wines. On offer is a small wine selection including Quoin Rock’s highly-rated Black Series MCC. The menu features thoughtfully prepared small plates to accompany but not overshadow the wine. Read our full review on Qbar here.
For a more casual wine tasting experience, pop in to Acid Food & Wine Bar in Parktown North. The chic new bar has a warm cozy atmosphere and circular bar counter enhancing the intimate setting. The carefully curated wine list (which changes regularly) features wines from marginalised producers and unusual varieties – all available by the glass. The food menu of bar snacks and small plates includes fresh oysters with green nam jim dressing and ultra creamy green pea and balnori goats cheese risotto.
Kids come first at The Old Oak
Hidden along the greens of the Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club is a wonderful new child-friendly restaurant The Old Oak. For the kids, there’s a massive playground equipped with a climbing wall, dedicated colouring books and pencils, and a special kids menu. For us adults, there’s an excellent wine list and contemporary food menu including wagyu burgers and hand-stretched Neapolitan pizzas.
Glory x The Artivist pop up
Glory, the elusive Asian eatery, is back with a brand new pop-up at The Artivist in Braamfontein. The pop-up runs Thursday – Saturday for dinner and is open for lunch on Saturdays. Choose between the full set menu or bar snacks that include Glory's signature fried chicken bao with miso butter, or ceviche tacos with whitefish and olive.
