Democracy Bar, situated in the energetic Illovo Muse centre in Illovo, opened its doors in December 2024 and is now a popular nightlife spot. With speciality drinks, edgy decor, food, and even a polling system (true to their name) that allows patrons to vote for or against drinks, music, and menu items, it's an unusual space on Joburg's nighttime circuit. 

The origin of Democracy Bar is the age-old tale of two guys who wanted to open their own bar and restaurant. Both Herman Visser and Dr Ewoudt Cloete have had successful corporate careers in human resources and marketing, respectively, but their full-time jobs simply weren’t enough. Seeing a gap in the market, Cloete and Visser invested their life savings to realise their dream.

In this restaurant-bar, variety reigns supreme. The menu is packed with delicious fusion food, from indulgent comfort bites to fresh, bold flavours. Guests can satisfy their cravings with options like the famous buffalo cauliflower wings, buttermilk fried peri-peri chicken strips, and bobotie spring rolls. For those seeking lighter bites, dukkah-roasted halloumi skewers and blackened fish tacos offer fresh, globally-inspired flavours that cater to every taste – including veggie-friendly options.

Democracy Bar is run by an expert team of managers and kitchen creatives, all with experience from Joburg's hottest spots. The bartenders are ready to surprise guests with inventive cocktails like the bold pina collusion and refreshing Mexican junta, along with classic drinks like the whiskey sour and mojito. In addition to its signature cocktails, the bar offers a curated selection of premium spirits, including Dead Man’s Fingers rum and Whitley Neill gin, alongside an excellent range of local and international beers, crisp wines, and non-alcoholic drinks.
