The Old Town is a part of the modern city of Chania, and once again it is connected with the harbour. It is just the other way to walk around the bay. Strolling by the water, you will see all the ages change before your eyes. Chania has been under Venetian rule, later fell under the Ottoman Empire – you can see evidence of both periods next to each other. Make a turn a little inwards, and you will be sucked into a labyrinth of small romantic alleys — the area flourishes of taverns and cafes where you can enjoy all local tastes. The district of Splantzia shows a lot of the Ottoman presence, while Topanas area was the one where Christians lived in the time of Turkish rule.
