Take a bus, or rent a car (you can even hire a taxi, but it will be probably the most expensive way) for a full-day tour to Rethymno. The third most populous town in Crete is located 60 km east of Chania. The mix of Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman heritage has its charm there and is different from what you see in Chania or Heraklion. The small alleys of Rethymno are perfect for finding souvenirs and gifts too.
