Less than 10 km to the southwest from Chania you will find a significant archaeological venue. Located near the Varypetro village and elevated on a hill 250 m above everything around, you will find the remains of an ancient citadel. The “kastelos” of the acropolis type is dated back to the Minoan Era. Anyway, most of what you see now is a heritage of the Byzantine period. Climbing to the top of the ancient fortress will reward you with dazzling views to the sea and the inner part of Crete.
