Chania holds its Minoan heritage even if it is not as famous as the Palace of Knossos near Heraklion. Walking around the Old Town area, travelers have the chance to observe the remains of Ancient Kydonia. The settlement is situated at the hill of Kasteli. The excavated part of Kydonia is the most significant finding of the Minoan civilization in the western part of the island. Unfortunately, it is impossible to dig out a substantial part of what has been the town more than three millennia ago since it lies under the modern city of Chania.
