Rmanj Monastery

Martin Brod     more than a year ago
Founded in the 15th century, there is more to the Rmanj Monastery than meets the eye. This spectacular spot on the left bank of the Unac was abandoned once the Ottomans came into town, but the Bosnian bey Telli Hasan Pasha had the monastery re-established under the control of his brother, an Orthodox monk by the name of Prejodević. This didn’t exactly help the monastery, as it was burned to the ground time and time again over the next few centuries. This continued in the 20th century, when the Germans bombed it in World War II (the Partisans had set up a field hospital here). Croatian soldiers even had a go at it in 1995. The rebuilding work began at the end of the last war and continues today, but Rmanj gained protected status in 2007 so there is much hope for the future. This Serbian Orthodox monastery truly is the picture of resilience.
