A landmark that can be seen from so many points in the town and from every cafe and restaurant that has a terrace overhanging the river, this monument was erected for the 800th anniversary of the crowning of Turnovo as the capital of the second Bulgarian state (1185-1393). The monument depicts the four Bulgarian Tsars Assen, Peter, Kaloyan and Ivan Assen on horseback and commemorates their achievement in turning Veliko Turnovo into the great city it once was.
A walk over the Stambolov bridge (built in 1892) to the monument is well rewarded by the view that one receives on the other side of the houses of old Turnovo stacked one atop the other on the hillside opposite. It is a shame the monument is not lit up at night, and plans are afoot to do precisely that.
