The highest peak in the Kingdom of the Netherlands is actually located on a faraway tropical island. In the heart of Saba you'll find Mt. Scenery with an elevation of 877m. Although its last eruption occurred in 1640, it's still a potentially dangerous volcano. Hikers in good physical condition will be rewarded, after overcoming 1,064 steps, with great views of the surrounding islands of St. Maarten and St. Eustatius. Reaching the top of Saba's very own Stairway to Heaven may be trying but the fantastic memory of finishing a tough climb through a tropical jungle will last forever. Take some time during the climb to enjoy the beautiful flowers, mahogany trees and the enormous ferns, but bring plenty of water as none is available along the way. We recommend you start just before sunrise from Windwardside, but you can cheat and begin your journey farther up at the Ecolodge.
