Located just 12km outside of Brno itself, Veveří Castle holds an important place in the history of this part of the world. It was founded as a hunting lodge, although it rose to prominence as a prison in the 13th century. It has developed over time with the region, facing the same bumps and bruises as the nation itself. New areas of the castle open every year, and the view from the river is one of the most arresting in the country.
