Not unlike the rest of the world, politicians aren't exactly held in high regard in Aruba, but the late Gilberto Francois 'Betico' Croes is an exception. As leader of the political party 'Movimiento Electoral di Puebloe' he paved the road to Aruba's separation from the rest of the Dutch Antilles. This charismatic man was also the co-creater of the national seal, flag and hymn of Aruba thus earning the much beloved moniker 'Father of the Aruban Nation'. He died in an accident on December 31,1985 (the night of status aparte - the official separation) and sadly never saw his accomplishment come to fruition. His birthday on January 25 is now an official holiday that pays tribute to the island's greatest statesman to date. Various cultural and sporting events are held across the island on this day.
