Set inside the guts of the Napoleonic-era Fort Grodzisko, which is set into the hill overlooking the city, Centrum Hevelianum is a science park/museum built to honour Johannes Hevelius (Jan Heweliusz in Polish), the famed astronomer born in Gdańsk in 1611.

The centre consists of two parts, the first of which is called 'Time Machine – The Human & The Bullet'. Set inside the brick tunnels of this 19th-century fortress, the exhibition recreates what the fort would have looked like when it was first built: complete with cannons, weaponry and lifelike mannequins in period uniform in active poses throughout the fort's atmospheric corridors.

The second part of the centre is the science part with 6 different interactive/multimedia exhibits. 'Around The World' takes you on a journey to explore and understand the environment and culture of each continent. Other exhibits like 'With Energy' and 'Puzzle' introduce children to physics and mathematical problems in a fun manner. Featuring plenty of machines, computers and interactive gadgets, Hevelianum encourages visitors to get hands-on and explains the complexities of science in an idiot-proof way. Opening hours for each part tend to change regularly so check their website!

The center's initiative 'Hevelianum without barriers’ allows all individuals, including those with a disability, to discover Gradowa Hill in many ways (NOTE: This excludes the 'Time Machine' section). There is also section "Playing with History", FREE of admission, with games including cannon training, a memory game and the possibility to try on old uniforms. They also have workshops and tours with educators, which is possible in English if you book in advance!
