Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square

With easy access to the Gautrain and hundreds of stores, the Sandton City mega-mall is Africa's most prestigious shopping destination. There's not much you can't get in Sandton City whether you are looking for the latest gadget, hiking equipment, on-trend fashion or crystal decanter.

From international high street labels Mango and Zara and luxury brands Cartier and Louis Vuitton, local budget style favourite Mr Price (fondly referred to as Monsieur Prisee) to department stores Stuttafords and Edgars, Sandton City is a one-stop for fashion. Try Typo for quirky stationery and gifts and African Origins for a great range of African beaded goods, homeware and jewellery.

There's a gigantic food court with a wide range of choices, plus delis and cafes like Deli One, Walnut Grove and Nandos spread throughout the mall.

The latest edition to Sandton City is the bling-filled Diamond Walk, the place to find global luxury household names like Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Giorgio Armani, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, Cartier and a host of other luxury brands.

NELSON MANDELA SQUARE
Built around an open piazza flanked by restaurants and bars and the Sandton Library, Nelson Mandela Square is Sandton's most popular tourist destination. Standing tall at the top of the square is a gigantic bronze statue of Nelson Mandela, a favourite place for tourists to take photos, while inside the mall connects to Sandton City and Legacy Corner making it one of the biggest shopping complexes on the continent.

For lunch or dinner choose from classic steaks at The Butcher Shop, seafood and sushi at The Big Mouth and elegant bistro dining at Tashas, a classy cafe with excellent service and a flawless menu. The flashiest place to be seen on the square is at Tang, a fashionable modern Asian restaurant and Champagne bar overlooking the square that is a buzzing place to taste Joburg’s high life (make sure to look the part and dress up before heading here).

Inside the mall you can find an array of high street and high-end fashion and jewellery shops and the entrances to the neighbouring Sandton City and Michelangelo Towers malls. Major department stores and brands to look out for include the Hamley's toy shop, Presidential Shirts, a small boutique selling the colourful silk shirts that were much loved by the late Nelson Mandela, and for colourful crafts and souvenirs there's Out of Africa.

Be careful when going to Nelson Mandela square. I got robbed in front of the revolving door of Radisson Blu Sandton Cityaround 19:17 in seconds after my tour guide dropped me after eating at one of the restaurants there. The police said one hour after I was robbed another robery was reported at Hilton. The 3 robbers pointing their guns at my inlaws and threatened to shoot. I was informed that hotel security doesn't carry gun. He only press the panic button. I will never stay at Radisson Blu again.
