Orlando West and Vilakazi Street may be Soweto's most famous heritage sites, but there is much more depth to Soweto's history than this famous street and the neighbouring Hector Pieterson memorial.

This tour brings the rich history of the often overlooked Soweto neighbourhood of Orlando East into the spotlight, taking in significant heritage monuments such as; Soweto's very first High School (Orlando High), the Orlando Community Hall where Robert Sobukwe founded the PAC, the Orlando Public Library which housed the book collection of the activist and ANC leader Dr Alfred Bitini Xuma, Orlando football stadium and the Orlando Police Station where the youth of Soweto went to present their petition of protest on 16th June 1976.

The tour will also visit the home of James Sofasonke Mpanza who in 1944 led the homeless and destitute people working on the Joburg gold reefs to Soweto, building a huge shanty town which had some 20,000 residents.

The tour is led by Eric Itzkin a local heritage expert and activist who has been crucial in helping the area receive recognition as an important heritage landmark.

Tour leaves at 13:00 from the car park at Sunnyside Park Hotel (tour by bus). Tour lasts approximately 4 hours
Costs R300 (Joburg Heritage members R250), booking essential.
