Experienced visitors to the Caribbean know that affordable accommodation is hard to find. Statia, however, is fortunate enough to have a sprawling, monumental structure that offers 20 basic rooms for basic prices at a convenient location. You can’t go wrong with a two-star seaside hotel, but bear in mind that the golden era of the Golden Era Hotel is rooted firmly in the past. But when one considers its outdoor pool, lush garden setting and its sunny terrace, you really could do much worse. A few of the clean and comfortable rooms have their own balcony with sea views and are definitely worth the extra bucks. Although management says that the hotel was recently renovated, we couldn't find much evidence to support this claim. The breakfast which lacked a number of essential ingredients was a bit of a joke, and we didn't appreciate playing 'hide and seek' with the staff that early in the morning. Great snorkelling is only a short walk away.
