The custom of decorating eggs is an ancient symbol of life and rebirth. The tradition of decorating the eggs (pisanki) was present on the Polish lands throughout the centuries. Ritual of ‘writing’ on the eggs was performed strictly during the time of fasting (Lent) before Easter, traditionally only by women. This exhibition presents  Easter eggs decorated in a wide variety of techniques such as batik (drawing on eggs with melted wax, then dipping them into dyes), engraving (eggs are dyed first then scratched to reveal the white of an eggshell) and applique (painting). The annual Easter exhibition also displays a variety of palms (dried-flower arrangements on a stick) as well as Easter cards, Easter lamb figurines made of pastry and clay, paper flowers, ceramic and wooden bird figurines made by local artists.
