Dominated by a huge needle-like monument this is one of the first Warsaw landmarks seen on the way to the city centre from the airport. The towering monument was one of the first to be built in the city following the Second World War. It features some interesting socialist reliefs depicting Red Army troops liberating Polish civilians, and the inscription reads ‘To the memory of the soldiers lost in the liberation of Poland 1944-1945’. Mass graves containing the remains of 20,000 soldiers flank each side of the memorial.
