Generally considered to be the founder of the Lithuanian state and a bit of a character to say the least, Mindaugas was clumsy in his personal affairs, switched from paganism to Catholicism and back again to suit his needs and was eventually assassinated by his nephew. This granite likeness of the man sees him sitting on his throne (sostas), the word from which the Lithuanian language gets its word for capital, sostinė.
