After tasting the wine at Mayer, it'll come as no surprise that Beethoven composed one of the greatest classical works ever, his glorious Ninth, while living in this building. The traditional Mayer am Pfarrplatz Heurige has been producing wine since 1683, and it makes a great excursion from the city centre, a few kilometres to the south. Try some of the typical tavern food, local or Austrian options such as Mangalitsa pork lardo, Carinthian salami or roast pork with sauerkraut served in a buffet – perhaps seated on the terrace as the band pipes up around 19:00 every day. The salads, cheese and sweet desserts are equally memorable.
