The long street running between Vienna’s sixth and seventh districts is home to major international chains offering clothing, music, house wares, and practically everything else. Tucked into the side streets you’ll find smaller boutiques and unique local labels, especially in the narrow cobbled streets of the Spittelberg, just up Stiftgasse, behind the Museum Quarter.

Vienna Great news - Mariahilferstrasse has just gone pedestrian! Shoppers, bikers and occasional lost drivers are still confused about traffic arrangement, but you can now criss-cross the street safely virtually anywhere and city bus 13A will most likely be rerouted soon as well. New designer benches have popped up here and there and more pedestrian-friendly amenities are being planned. New stores are coming up as well. Let's hope it all works out the way it has been conceived.

Newly-renovated Merkur supermarket on the lower level of Gerngross shopping center on Mariahilferstrasse (entrance from U-3 Neubaugasse subway station) is a highly welcome addition to Vienna's gourmet shopping scene. Compared to the city's smaller supermarkets, such as Billa or Spar, where the choice of items is limited and the quality is often mediocre to say the least, this huge grocery store offers just about anything your palate would desire, and much more! Excellent selection of fruit and vegetables, huge meat, cheese and fish counters, incredible choice of baked goods and confectionery, and friendly personnel! All there's to be said - more places like these, please!
