Šoštanj castle is a perfect vantage point from which you can admire Šoštanj and the lakes of the Šalek Valley. It is the oldest among three Šoštanj castles and had been inhabited from the 12th until the 15th century. It has been abandoned for a long time, what is left now are mostly ruins, with the exception of the defense tower (bergfrid), which is recognised as one of the rare partly preserved Romanesque towers in Slovenia. In German, the Šoštanj Castle is referred to as Scöonstein, which means a beautiful stone.
