09 Jul 2024
If you’ve not been abroad for a while or to a tourist hotspot near yourself, you may not be aware of what virtual tours are. As the name suggests, instead of having an actual tour of a location, you will have what is called a virtual tour. Virtual reality has come a long way since its inception, allowing us to experience things remotely and take part in nature, art galleries - even online casino settings. But like us, at first, you may be wondering: What is the point of going on a virtual tour instead of the real thing? Why not just go for the proper tour?

Well, there are a few benefits. You can go at your own pace; you don’t have to rush so that you can understand everything as you go along. It also makes the whole experience accessible to those who may not be physically able to go on the proper trip. It also means that you don’t have to physically go to the tourist hotspot yourself and instead can enjoy it remotely. Today we are going to look at five of the hottest virtual tours currently available out there.

Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro

To save you the long trip over to Brazil, you can now see the 30-metre-tall statue of Christ the Redeemer that oversees Rio de Janeiro from the comfort of your own home. It’s remote location atop the Corcovado Mountain means that even if you went to Brazil yourself, a lot of people who are less than physically abled wouldn’t be able to make the trip to the summit to see it in person, so the ability to experience this without deteriorating away from its magnificence is great.

Eiffel Tower, Paris

Located in the capital of France, the iconic tower that stands at an impressive 324 metres is one of the most popular destinations for tourists in the world, and along with this, it can bring quite ridiculous waiting times to be able to see it. And so if you choose to experience it via a virtual tour, you can do this as and when you want to from the comfort of your own home. Likewise, it is also a tough ascent to get to the top, so this virtual tour makes it accessible to everyone.

Taj Mahal, India

This beautiful architectural masterpiece was built back in the 17th century by an Indian Emperor as a tasting place for his wife. And since then, it has attracted millions of people who come each year to see and wonder at its marvel. The palace itself was reported to have taken 22 years to build. And where it is based in India, it means a lot of travel from a lot of places in the world. Pairing this with the hot climate means that a lot of people find that the virtual tour that is on offer is a lot more accommodating.

Stonehenge, UK

This is by far the most ancient landmark on the list here today. It is in Wiltshire, England, and dates back over 5,000 years! And it is fairly remote from the capital of London, so it isn’t easily accessible. However, thankfully, there is a virtual tour that is run by English Heritage, which gives you a full view of the ancient site and also gives you a history of its purpose and design.

Colosseum, Rome

Dating back to the Roman Era, this is the largest amphitheatre in the world, which, back in its day, would have accommodated up to 80,000 people. Although it wasn’t sports such as football or rugby that we see now, it was more combat between gladiators to the death. It's been around for just over 2000 years and is one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in Italy and there is a virtual tour that allows you to see outside and inside the Colosseum

In Summary

Virtual tours are certainly getting a lot more popular and hopefully today you’ve learned a bit more about exactly what they are and why they’re getting a lot more popular. They make some of the best tourist destinations in the world accessible to everyone.
