Trieste's glorious opera house was modelled on the famed La Scala in Milan and first opened in 1801. Like many of the city's most notable buildings, and indeed the Trieste itself, Teatro Verdi has experienced various name and structural changes over the centuries, finally settling on the formal title Teatro Lirco Guiseppe Verdi in 1901, just hours after the great composer's death.
