The Trebišnjica river runs through the centre of Trebinje like the proud beacon of life that it is, imbuing the city with a light air that adds to this most delightful of locations. The river itself has an interesting history, as it was once one of the longest sinking rivers in the world, a complex network that weaves its way around the Karst landscape before escaping into the Neretva and the Adriatic Sea. The largest hydroelectricity projects in Yugoslavia took place on this important waterway, adding a modern tinge to its natural vitality. It also happens to be immensely beautiful.
