The House Under the Star

  Rynek Staromiejski 35      (+48) 56 660 56 12     05 Sep 2024

Home to a number of Toruń's most affluent residents, 'The House Under the Star' differs from the city's dominant Brick Gothic architechtural style with a dazzling Baroque facade.

The House Under the Star in Toruń.
Originally built in the second half of the 13th century, previous owners included the 15th-century poet and humanist Filippo Buonaccorsi, also known as Kallimach, and the town councellour Jan Jerzy Zöbner, who gave the tenement house its current baroque decor at the end of the 17th century.

The historical interiors of this townhouse hosts an exhibition called ‘World of the Orient’, featuring a wonderful collection of weapons, armour, bronze goods, semi-precious stones, sculptures and ceramic goods from the Far East. Highlights of this treasure trove include a number of ornamental Japanese tsuba (sword hilts) and kozuka (small daggers), as well as a Chinese jia (ritual wine vessel) and its hien (vessel stand), that are over 3000 years old.
