The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, or simply 'St. John's Cathedral' or 'Toruń Cathedral', is one of the Toruń's most impressive sights.
This prime example of Brick-Gothic architecture shares the UNESCO World Heritage Site listing with the medieval Old Town and still functions as the seat of the Toruń's Roman Catholic Diocese. Originating in the 13th century, it achieved its present form at the end of the 15th century. It is believed that Nicolaus Copernicus was educated in the school associated with the cathedral, as his maternal uncle and guardian held the position of Prince-Bishop nearby Warmia and ws preparing his nephew for a career in the church. One of the cathedral's side chapels is associated with the famed astronomer.
Amongst the richly-decorated and furnished interior is a 14th-century depiction of the crucifixion and the last judgement, a 13th-century baptismal font in which Copernicus is believed to have been baptised, and a 16th-century epitaph to him. The tower is the home of Tuba Dei, the third-largest bell in Poland. Outside, the tower's 'rafters’ clock' shows time with only one hand!
