One of the best preserved castles in the Algarve, Loulé Castle does a better job than most of transporting the visitor through the region’s storied history. Three castle walls remain from the 13th century, although the castle itself was damaged in the 1755 earthquake and required massive restoration during the 19th century. Exploring the castle is entirely free, and the views are every bit as special as you expect from somewhere so strategically positioned.
