Faro’s old town is low-key one of the most delightful attractions in the Algarve, and the monumental Arco Da Vila is the only way to enter. Built in 1812, the arch was constructed over one of the medieval gates that had been set into the fortress, and it has all sorts of curiosities found within. Look out for the statue of Saint Thomas Aquinas for a start, along with the only horseshoe gate in the Algarve. Gorgeous.
