Tepelena's modest historical museum, one of very few such museums surviving in Albania, retains the original pickaxe and rifle symbol of the old Labour Party on the facade. Inside, several rooms have objects and stories illustrating the town's long and turbulent history - from bronze-age archaeological items to Ali Pasha's times and the battles for independence, first against the Ottomans, later against the Germans - depicted in dramatic socialist-realist paintings.
