Even in antiquity, fortress planners agreed that the rocky location just above today's Lekli village, commanding the narrow northern entrance of the Drinos river valley and the so-called Straights of Antigone trade route from a great height, was perfect for defence purposes. For long, archaeologists searched among the ancient walls here for the lost city of Antigone, until that was discovered closer to Gjirokastra. The currently visible fortifications linked to natural rock outcrops on this hilltop date to the 15th century - but it's mainly the valley views that remain lingering in your memory after visiting this site. Near the village, the Lekli cave is at least 100 metres long but still of unknown length - and we don't suggest you should try to find out how much further it goes without professional guidance.
