Piirissaar Island

more than a year ago
This tiny island makes for a relaxing day-trip getaway, and best yet, you don’t even need a car to get there! The marshy island sits at the near edge of Lake Peipsi, and like other places in the vicinity, it was settled by Old Believers, Russians who fled church reform in their homeland in the 16th century. Also like other places in the vicinity, the land here is used for growing onions. There are three villages on the island, whose current year-round population is around 30. Even more interesting than the island itself might be the journey there and back.

Getting there In summer a ferry runs from Laiksaar to Piirissaar up to 3 times per day depending on the day of the week.  See www.veeteed.com for details.
NB! Ferry only runs from Spring after the ice has melted until the formation of ice in Autumn.
