If you're a General Bem diehard - and apparently they exist, at least in Tarnów - then you may want to make the minor detour to see his alleged birthplace in the area just south of the market square known as 'the Burek.' In fact, no one knows exactly where the great general was born, but the need to know and erect a plaque at the site was so great, that local historian Jan Leniek deigned this house at number 8, on the square now named in his honour, as good an assumption as any. Up went the plaque in 1910 - 60 years after the good general's passing - and today you'll find the private residence adorned with wreaths and flags on special occasions. Across the street is the Burek marketplace with its whimsical Organ Grinder.
